Bitcoin climbs past $90,000 as Trump downplays Greenland acquisition talk in Davos

Bitcoin rebounded toward the $90,000 level on Wednesday in U.S. hours as former President Donald Trump adopted a more measured tone on Greenland during remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump said the United States would pursue negotiations to revisit the idea of acquiring Greenland, stressing that the process would not involve the use of force and would not pose a threat to NATO. “All I’m asking is a piece of ice,” he said, framing the proposal as diplomatic rather than confrontational.

He also said an announcement on the next Federal Reserve chair would be made “in the not too distant future,” while again criticizing current Chair Jerome Powell. Trump, who appointed Powell during his first term, said the Fed chief has been “always too late” in responding to economic conditions.

Bitcoin climbed about 2.2% from session lows to briefly reclaim $90,000, reversing part of its recent decline. The recovery followed several days of selling pressure across risk assets, including cryptocurrencies, driven by investor concerns over rising tensions between the U.S. and Europe linked to Greenland. Trump had previously floated the possibility of tariffs on several European countries.

Meanwhile, gold eased back from a fresh record near $4,900 as some investors rotated out of safe-haven assets.
