Bitcoin remained under pressure Tuesday, slipping 0.42% from midnight UTC to $78,874, even as parts of the broader crypto market moved higher. The CoinDesk 20 index gained 0.2%, while the memecoin index advanced 0.41%, helped by strength across BNB Chain tokens.
BTC was changing hands near $78,800, down 0.42% since midnight UTC and 0.75% over the previous 24 hours, according to CoinDesk data. The move leaves Bitcoin roughly 4.1% below the $82,320 peak reached last week, a level it has so far failed to reclaim.
Ether was more resilient, slipping only 0.02% to trade around $2,490. Solana was also nearly flat, declining 0.06% to $103.77.
Market breadth remained negative, with 42 of the 100 assets in the CoinDesk 100 trading lower. BNB was among the notable gainers, rising 2% since midnight to $754. Other BNB Chain-linked tokens, including CAKE and SYRUP, also climbed as traders rotated into the ecosystem.
The CoinDesk 5 Index fell 0.47% on Tuesday, while the CoinDesk 20 posted a 0.2% gain. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index outperformed both, adding 0.41%.
Derivatives market
Bearish taker flow persists: Crypto futures traders continued to show a bearish bias through the taker buy-sell ratio. Rising crude prices, expectations of a possible Federal Reserve rate hike and elevated bond yields have added pressure to risk assets. Takers are traders who execute orders at available market prices, removing liquidity from an exchange’s order book.
Trading activity picks up without a major OI shift: Total futures open interest remained near $141 billion over 24 hours, while trading volume increased 5% to $149.85 billion. The pattern suggests traders are becoming more active without materially increasing their leverage, pointing to repositioning rather than strong conviction in a new market direction.
AERO posts the strongest top-100 rally: Aerodrome Finance’s AERO token jumped 17% in 24 hours, making it the biggest gainer among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Futures open interest simultaneously climbed to a record 129 million tokens, suggesting that leveraged long positions are contributing to the spot-market advance.
CVD strengthens AERO’s bullish case: AERO’s 24-hour open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta also remained positive. This indicates aggressive buying, with market participants favoring immediate executions over passive limit orders.
INJ breaks higher with supportive futures data: Injective’s INJ gained 10% and displayed a futures-market structure similar to AERO. The setup adds weight to the token’s move above $6, which had served as a supply area since mid-June and repeatedly limited its upside.
Bitcoin futures show signs of possible short positioning: Aggregate Bitcoin open interest remained below 700,000 BTC, reflecting relatively limited appetite for leverage. However, open interest in major USDT- and USD-margined contracts increased to 265,000 BTC from 257,000 BTC while Bitcoin fell from approximately $80,000 to $78,700. That combination may indicate that some market participants are positioning for additional downside through short trades.
Most major tokens still show seller dominance: Negative 24-hour CVD readings across several large cryptocurrencies indicate that sellers remain in control. AVAX, XLM and DOGE were notable exceptions, with each registering positive CVDs.
Options volatility remains subdued: Volatility measures for both Bitcoin and Ether remain close to recent lows. The muted readings suggest traders have yet to significantly increase option purchases or hedging activity.
Deribit options retain a bullish tilt: Weekly BTC and ETH calls accounted for the largest portion of 24-hour trading volume on Deribit. The activity indicates that traders continue to hold some short-term upside expectations despite the bearish signal coming from broader taker flows.
Token moves
PancakeSwap’s CAKE was among the leading CoinDesk 100 performers, gaining 4.9% since midnight UTC and 7.5% over the last 24 hours. Its advance extends a rally that started late last week as traders shifted toward BNB Chain assets and reacted to the exchange’s push into tokenized stocks.
VET also posted strong gains, rising 8% on the day and 9% over 24 hours. SYRUP followed closely, putting several DeFi and enterprise-focused tokens among the day’s strongest performers while larger cryptocurrencies struggled.
Raydium’s RAY was the biggest loser, falling 5.5% since midnight UTC. The Solana-based decentralized exchange token has largely followed SOL lower.
Kaspa’s KAS declined 4.7%, giving back much of its weekend advance after ranking among Monday’s biggest gainers. Bittensor’s TAO similarly retreated, dropping 1.5% to $256 and posting a 3.7% loss over 24 hours after leading the market on Sunday.
AERO remained the strongest performer over the full 24-hour period, up 18% at 64 cents. However, its intraday gains have cooled to 2.8% since midnight UTC.
Jupiter’s JUP fell another 3.8% to $0.24, extending losses into a second consecutive session following Monday’s 9% decline. No clear catalyst was immediately behind the latest drop.
