Cardano has entered the x402 ecosystem, adding network-specific tools to the official software kit so developers can create applications and AI agents that pay for online services using ADA and other Cardano-based tokens.
The integration remains in the testing phase. Cardano’s x402 facilitator has processed a transaction on a pre-production network, but it has not yet been tested on the mainnet.
x402 Brings Payments Into Internet Requests
The x402 standard turns the web’s existing “402 Payment Required” response into a mechanism for automated payments.
Under the model, an online service can return its price and payment requirements when an application requests access. An AI agent can then sign the required transaction, and the service releases the requested data or computing resources after the payment is verified.
For autonomous software, this could remove several steps from conventional online payments. An AI agent producing a report could purchase a particular dataset on demand without a human creating an account, entering payment-card information or subscribing to a monthly plan.
Coinbase introduced x402 in 2025 and later contributed the protocol to a Linux Foundation-backed organization. Members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services.
Solana, XRP Ledger and several Ethereum-compatible networks already support x402, while Cardano’s addition expands the range of blockchain networks available for automated payments.
Cardano Integration Starts With TypeScript
Cardano Foundation engineers began work on the integration after an x402 specification was accepted in June. The team developed the software needed on both the client and server sides, alongside a facilitator responsible for verifying and submitting payments.
The initial release supports TypeScript, while Python support is planned for a future update.
According to the facilitator documentation, the system has successfully completed a transaction on Cardano’s pre-production network. It has not yet undergone mainnet testing.
Developers can therefore begin integrating and experimenting with Cardano-based x402 payments, but the release does not demonstrate widespread commercial use of ADA by autonomous agents.
Cardano is now competing alongside Solana and XRP Ledger to become part of the infrastructure developers use for machine-to-machine payments. As AI agents become more capable of acting independently, blockchain networks are positioning their native assets as potential payment tools for automated access to data, software and computing services.
