Bitcoin held near $86,000 during European trading Wednesday as momentum across the broader crypto market became less uniform. BTC was at $86,379, up 0.24% since midnight UTC and 1.3% over 24 hours, while daily spot volume dropped 36% to $38 billion.
The CoinDesk 100 gained 0.67% to 1,926.99, although 38 of its 100 constituents were lower on the day. Over the previous 24 hours, 87 tokens were higher and 13 were lower, showing that much of the market’s broader gains came earlier in the session.
Among major cryptocurrencies, XRP climbed 3.3% to $1.62, while Bitcoin Cash rose 2% to $351.59. Ether slipped 0.089% to $2,750.24 and Chainlink was nearly unchanged.
Oil Retreats as Geopolitical Risk Eases
Brent crude fell below $100 for the first time since Sept. 9, trading at $99.13 after reaching around $108 earlier this month. The decline followed renewed hopes for a potential U.S.-Iran agreement, with a Qatari mediator meeting U.S. officials in New York and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian scheduled to speak at the United Nations General Assembly.
Other traditional markets also weakened. Gold fell 0.85% to $4,321, while silver declined 2.2% to $65.53. The dollar index gained 0.21% to 100.76, and U.S. equity futures were largely flat.
Futures Data Signals Caution
Crypto futures volume dropped 21% over 24 hours to $227 billion, while open interest increased 1% to $159.4 billion. Taker activity shifted toward shorts, which represented 51% of volume, marking the first time in more than a week that sellers held the larger share.
The combination of lower trading volume, rising OI and heavier short activity suggests some traders are preparing for a possible pullback.
Leverage costs remain elevated as well. Binance’s USDT margin borrowing rate stood at 5.49%, only slightly below last week’s 5.52% and its highest level since October.
Bitcoin’s decline below $86,000 was not accompanied by a notable increase in open interest. OI remained close to Tuesday’s 710,000 BTC, suggesting the move was driven more by position reduction than by aggressive new short exposure.
Large traders have also reduced their bullish positioning. Binance’s whale long/short account ratio fell below 0.98, while the position ratio declined to 1.97 from above 2.3. Whale ratios on OKX and Bybit were near 1, indicating more balanced positioning.
XRP futures OI rose for a second straight day to 2.50 billion tokens, the highest since Aug. 20. Most of the increase occurred during the earlier rally rather than the subsequent decline from $1.69 to $1.59. Coinglass described Binance whale positioning in XRP as “extremely bearish.”
BCH Leads the Major Tokens
Bitcoin Cash stood out among major cryptocurrencies after CME announced plans to launch BCH futures alongside Uniswap futures. BCH jumped more than 30% over 24 hours to $351.59 and was up 2% since midnight.
BCH open interest increased about 7% to its highest level since Aug. 22, while annualized funding reached 8%. Its OI-adjusted CVD was also the strongest among major tokens over 24 hours, pointing to increased long-side participation.
Some smaller markets are showing even more crowded positioning. NEAR funding reached 43% annualized, while BTW funding moved above 100%, levels that indicate traders are paying heavily to maintain long positions.
Deribit’s DVOL remained around 38%, placing it near the 23rd percentile of its yearly range. The exchange said implied volatility remains relatively inexpensive compared with the strength of recent spot-market moves.
Bitcoin options activity remains concentrated around higher strikes, with call open interest around $90,000, $95,000 and $100,000 largely structured through condors and butterflies. OI at $75,000 and lower points to areas where traders may be positioned for downside protection or support.
DeFi Outperforms as Altcoins Diverge
Altcoin performance was mixed. BONK rose 14% since midnight and 17% over 24 hours, while PENGU gained 8.3% and 20%, respectively. The broader CoinDesk Memecoin Index, however, fell 0.31% on the day. SPX6900 dropped 1.1%, PEPE declined 1% and PUMP fell 1.9%.
LayerZero gained 22% over 24 hours to $1.44, while The Graph climbed 14%. Much of those gains occurred earlier, rather than during Wednesday’s latest trading.
The DeFi Select Index rose 0.83% on the day and 9.6% over 24 hours, making it the strongest-performing CoinDesk index group. Aave traded around $151.18, while Aerodrome Finance added 6.1%.
Among decliners, Worldcoin fell 3%, Polkadot lost 2.9% and Jito dropped 2.8%. Jito was also down 0.16% over the previous 24 hours, highlighting the uneven nature of the latest crypto-market move.
