Strategy’s Potential MSCI Removal Could Trigger Fresh Market Turmoil

Bitcoin is trading near $82,800, gaining 1.5% over the past 24 hours, as fresh concerns emerge over whether Michael Saylor’s Strategy could lose its place in certain MSCI equity indexes. At the same time, Indonesia is facing a separate MSCI classification review that has contributed to market uncertainty. These developments have raised questions about whether pressure on corporate shares could eventually affect Bitcoin demand.

On October 15, 2026, MSCI launched a consultation on potentially moving Indonesia from emerging-market status to standalone-market classification. The index provider cited concerns involving market accessibility, ownership disclosure, and regulatory enforcement. The Jakarta Composite Index fell below IDR 5,000 after triggering a circuit breaker on Friday and dropped another 5.2% at the start of trading today.

Indonesia’s classification has not yet been changed. MSCI’s consultation is scheduled to end on April 30, 2027, with a final decision expected by June 30. Some index changes have already been placed on hold during the review. Separately, MSCI has introduced eligibility rules that could affect investment-holding companies, including Strategy and Metaplanet.

The list of potentially affected companies is expected on November 11, while any resulting index adjustments could follow after November 30. Reuters estimates that Strategy could face approximately $2.8 billion in potential share outflows. For Bitcoin, the main concern is whether such pressure could weaken investor sentiment or restrict Strategy’s ability to raise capital for future BTC purchases.

Indonesia’s Market Rout Raises Transparency Concerns

Indonesia’s stock market has experienced a steep sell-off, with billionaire businessman Haji Isam facing criticism over his acquisition of Bayan Resources (BYAN). The Jakarta Composite Index declined 14.91% during the week ending October 16, as MSCI considered reclassifying the country from an emerging market to a standalone market.

Some analysts believe the Bayan Resources transaction may have intensified foreign investors’ concerns about corporate transparency and market integrity. Bhima Yudhistira, executive director of CELIOS, drew attention to the acquisition while discussing the proposed MSCI classification change.

Bhima questioned the deal’s transparency and the level of protection available to minority shareholders, arguing that it highlighted weaknesses in Indonesia’s capital-market supervision. Bloomberg Technoz also reported that the transaction may have affected international investors’ confidence in the country’s financial markets.

Through PT Jhonlin Baratama, Haji Isam acquired roughly 30.25% of Bayan Resources from Low Tuck Kwong and Elaine Low in a transaction reportedly worth around Rp26 trillion. The financing arrangements attracted further attention after shares in companies associated with Haji Isam, including Jhonlin Agro Raya and Pradiksi Gunatama, were pledged to state-owned Bank Mandiri.

MSCI’s concerns, however, extend beyond this individual deal. The index provider has pointed to opaque shareholding arrangements, suspected coordinated trading, and limited evidence of effective regulatory enforcement. MSCI has not publicly identified the Bayan acquisition as the reason for its proposed reclassification, instead citing wider structural problems in Indonesia’s equity market.

Even so, the transaction has intensified debate over whether concentrated ownership and limited transparency could undermine international investor confidence.

The episode has added to broader concerns about Indonesia’s market governance as foreign investors reconsider their exposure to local equities. Failure to demonstrate meaningful progress on transparency and enforcement could increase the risk of further capital outflows.

Will Strategy’s MSCI Risk Affect Bitcoin Prices?

Bitcoin traded between $80,900 and $82,900 over the past 24 hours, with its price approaching the upper end of that range. The $80,700 area remains a nearby support level, while the $82,500–$82,900 zone represents a significant resistance area.

A sustained move above resistance could reinforce Bitcoin’s recovery, while a failed breakout followed by a drop below support could revive bearish momentum.

Despite the latest daily gain, the broader outlook remains uncertain. Institutional capital flows continue to influence Bitcoin’s price, making spot Bitcoin ETF activity an important indicator of investor appetite and demand for the asset.

Strategy’s potential MSCI exclusion does not automatically mean that Bitcoin will face immediate selling pressure. Instead, traders may focus on whether BTC can hold above resistance while monitoring developments involving Strategy’s index eligibility and the estimated outflows from its shares.

Indonesia’s market turmoil demonstrates how benchmark decisions can trigger rapid changes in equity valuations. The reported 14.91% weekly decline in the Jakarta Composite Index illustrates the potential consequences of weakening investor confidence. However, Indonesia’s proposed market reclassification and Strategy’s possible removal from certain indexes involve different processes and risks.

If index-tracking funds sell Strategy shares following an exclusion, the additional supply could put downward pressure on its stock price. A lower valuation could also make it more difficult or expensive for the company to issue new shares to finance additional Bitcoin acquisitions.

This is the most plausible channel through which the MSCI issue could influence Bitcoin. If Strategy’s access to equity financing deteriorates, its pace of Bitcoin accumulation could slow, reducing one potential source of incremental market demand. Negative sentiment could also spread to other publicly traded companies that hold Bitcoin as a treasury asset.

For now, Bitcoin’s short-term momentum appears modestly positive following its 1.5% advance, but resistance remains a hurdle and macroeconomic uncertainty continues to weigh on the broader market. If investors see limited near-term upside in established cryptocurrencies, some may begin considering earlier-stage crypto projects as alternative opportunities.
