Sony’s Soneium blockchain initiative is preparing to introduce its native ecosystem coin, SONEIUM, on October 26. The project is designed to create an on-chain economy connecting entertainment intellectual property (IP), content creators, developers, fans, and investors.
Soneium already hosts more than 250 applications across gaming, music, anime, films, collectibles, and fan-created projects. Its next stage will concentrate on tokenized intellectual property, an approach that could give creators and rights holders alternative funding options while enabling fans to support entertainment properties.
The first project planned under the initiative is Moriusa, a character-based IP from Tokyo-based entertainment group Super State Holdings. Soneium also intends to collaborate with K-pop IP firm DayOneDream to tokenize royalties generated by concert-related businesses.
These developments demonstrate Soneium’s broader ambition to connect entertainment companies with communities interested in sharing in their commercial growth.
Instead of focusing primarily on cryptocurrency trading, the platform aims to establish an economy around creative content and intellectual property. Its planned products include IP Vault, designed to offer indirect access to entertainment investment opportunities, and IP Bond, a bond product backed by entertainment businesses.
The announcement has also sparked interest in the potential role of blockchain technology in gaming, particularly across Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem and major franchises such as Grand Theft Auto VI.
Could Sony’s Soneium Bring Crypto to PlayStation and GTA 6?
PlayStation is a natural focus when examining Sony’s influence on the gaming industry. GTA 6, meanwhile, is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment releases of its generation, highlighting the financial potential of globally recognized gaming franchises.
This raises the possibility that blockchain technology could eventually offer players ways to participate in gaming-related economies beyond purchasing titles and in-game content.
Soneium’s proposed infrastructure is intended to make intellectual property licensing, attribution, and royalty payments programmable on-chain. Such capabilities could potentially support authorized digital collectibles, licensed fan projects, and alternative financing models for entertainment businesses.
For gaming, this could create new opportunities for fans to support independent developers or participate in projects built around officially licensed entertainment properties through tokenized assets.
However, a direct connection between SONEIUM, PlayStation, and GTA 6 has not been established. The announcement does not confirm that Sony plans to introduce the token into PlayStation games or that Rockstar Games will incorporate blockchain technology into GTA 6.
Soneium’s Strategy Prioritizes Creators and Intellectual Property
A Soneium executive highlighted the platform’s goal of helping creators finance future projects on a larger scale while exploring new creative possibilities and stronger relationships with fans.
This vision centers on expanding how creative projects are funded and how their commercial value is distributed. Tokenized intellectual property could allow creators to seek financial support from their communities, while programmable revenue-sharing systems could distribute proceeds according to predetermined agreements.
The company is also developing an Onchain IP Architecture built around three components: an IP Registry, an IP Graph, and an IP Execution Layer. Together, these elements are intended to connect creative works with ownership records, licensing terms, and revenue distribution mechanisms.
Such systems could become more relevant as artificial intelligence makes it easier to generate, adapt, and remix digital content. Blockchain-based infrastructure could help establish clearer links between creative works, usage permissions, and payments.
By combining intellectual property financing, digital ownership, and programmable licensing, Soneium is positioning its ecosystem coin as part of a broader entertainment-focused strategy rather than simply another gaming cryptocurrency.
Whether this approach eventually reaches PlayStation or major franchises such as GTA 6 remains uncertain. For now, Soneium’s announced plans focus on building the infrastructure needed to connect entertainment properties with creators, investors, and fans.
