Sony has launched a new incubation program through Soneium to encourage the development of blockchain-powered entertainment products, with a focus on PlayStation games, anime, and digital collectibles. The initiative could create new opportunities for blockchain gaming and fan engagement, though Sony has not confirmed any plans to introduce cryptocurrency features directly into PlayStation.
The Sony Onchain Entertainment Incubation Program began accepting applications on October 29, with the submission window remaining open through December 2026. It invites startups and independent creators to build entertainment applications using Soneium, Sony’s blockchain platform.
Selected projects may receive technical resources, marketing assistance, business development guidance, community-building opportunities, and consideration for potential investment. Sony said the objective is to help developers turn experimental concepts into viable entertainment products that deliver meaningful benefits to users.
Soneium Program Targets Gaming, Anime, and Digital Collectibles
Sony’s latest initiative covers a broad range of entertainment categories rather than focusing solely on blockchain-based games. Eligible sectors include console, PC, and mobile gaming, alongside anime, manga, music, films, esports, immersive experiences, and creator communities.
The program also seeks projects that apply blockchain technology to change how audiences interact with entertainment intellectual property. Potential use cases include digital collectibles, fan communities, branded merchandise, and interactive experiences that allow users to participate more directly in creator-driven ecosystems.
Applicants must demonstrate a meaningful connection between entertainment, intellectual property, and onchain technology. Projects are required to integrate Soneium, although multichain development is permitted when the network remains an essential part of the product.
Sony has previously supported developers through two incubation programs. Soneium Spark selected 32 projects from more than 1,700 applications in 2024. In 2025, Soneium For All chose 11 projects from over 250 submissions.
The new initiative builds on those efforts by prioritizing entertainment-focused applications. Sony aims to support products that bring content, communities, and digital assets together to encourage continued user participation.
PlayStation Crypto Possibilities Draw Attention, but No Deal Is Confirmed
The announcement has renewed discussion about Sony’s broader blockchain strategy, particularly the potential for future PlayStation-related projects. PlayStation games are explicitly included in the program’s target categories, giving independent developers an opportunity to create entertainment products that work with Soneium.
Anime is another major focus, reflecting the popularity of entertainment franchises and their dedicated fan communities. The inclusion of anime and character-based intellectual property could encourage developers to experiment with blockchain collectibles and alternative ways for audiences to engage with their favorite brands.
However, the program does not establish that Sony plans to add cryptocurrency payments or other blockchain features directly to PlayStation. Its immediate goal is to help independent teams develop entertainment products using Soneium’s infrastructure.
Applications are expected to undergo evaluation between November 2026 and March 2027. Selected projects will receive support on a rolling basis, although participation does not guarantee investment. Any funding decisions will be assessed separately.
Sony’s latest move signals a broader effort to expand Soneium’s presence in the entertainment industry. By supporting projects spanning gaming, anime, and digital collectibles, the company is looking to encourage practical blockchain applications that benefit creators, businesses, and fans.
