Bitcoin’s GMMA Indicator Flashes Bearish Warning Similar to Previous Market Crashes
Bitcoin’s latest price chart is showing a bearish technical pattern that resembles signals recorded before the sharp declines in February and June. However, historical seasonality and Bitcoin’s performance following previous US midterm elections suggest the market could still have room to recover.
The warning comes from the Guppy Multiple Moving Average (GMMA), a technical indicator developed by trader Daryl Guppy. Market participants use it to assess short-term momentum alongside longer-term investor trends.
The indicator displays two groups of moving averages, which calculate the average price over different timeframes. One group tracks shorter periods to reflect trader activity, while the other uses longer periods to measure broader investor sentiment.
On Bitcoin’s daily chart, the price has fallen below both moving-average groups. At the same time, the short-term averages have moved beneath the longer-term averages, a development that Guppy’s framework interprets as a potential shift toward bearish momentum.
GMMA Shows Traders and Investors Turning Cautious
The GMMA indicator separates market participants into two groups. Its short-term moving averages represent the behavior of traders, while the longer-term averages reflect the positioning and sentiment of investors.
When the short-term group crosses below the long-term group, it suggests traders are increasingly moving toward selling rather than buying.
However, the crossover alone does not necessarily confirm a sustained bearish trend. Short-term trader sentiment can change quickly, making the direction of the longer-term averages an important factor in validating the signal.
Bitcoin’s current chart is showing that additional confirmation. The red lines representing the longer-term moving averages are narrowing and beginning to slope downward. This suggests investors are becoming less aggressive in their buying activity and are increasingly accepting lower price levels.
With both short-term traders and longer-term investors showing signs of weakness, the bearish setup appears more pronounced.
Previous GMMA Signals Came Before Major Bitcoin Declines
Bitcoin displayed a comparable GMMA configuration in late May, shortly before its price plunged below $60,000 during the first week of June.
Another bearish crossover emerged in late January and was followed by a decline from approximately $90,000 to around $62,000.
These historical examples highlight why traders are paying attention to the current signal. However, the indicator does not guarantee that another major correction will follow.
Its previous warnings have not always produced the expected outcome. Bearish confirmations in August and September 2025, for example, were followed by quick price recoveries rather than sustained declines.
ETF Outflows and Options Demand Add to Bearish Concerns
The latest technical warning is emerging alongside other signs of weakening demand for Bitcoin in the US market.
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds have experienced significant outflows, while options activity indicates growing interest in downside protection. Together, these developments suggest some investors are reducing exposure or preparing for the possibility of further losses.
There are also factors supporting a more optimistic outlook. Historical seasonality has generally favored Bitcoin during this period, while previous US midterm election cycles have often been followed by cryptocurrency market rallies.
The conflicting signals leave Bitcoin at an important technical and sentiment crossroads. The coming sessions could help determine whether the bearish GMMA pattern develops into another major correction or whether seasonal strength and historical post-election trends support a recovery.
