Aztec Network Launches Ignition Chain, Ethereum’s First Fully Decentralized L2
Ethereum Layer 2 protocol Aztec Network has officially launched its Ignition Chain, becoming the first fully decentralized Layer 2 on Ethereum’s mainnet.
“Aztec just shipped the Ignition Chain, the first fully decentralized L2 on Ethereum. This launches the decentralized consensus layer that powers the Aztec Network,” the team announced on X.
The launch coincided with the validator queue reaching 500—a key milestone signaling that the network is ready to secure operations and begin block production.
The Ignition Chain powers Aztec’s vision of a fully decentralized “private world computer,” enabling developers to build DeFi applications with complete privacy. By integrating zero-knowledge proofs with Ethereum’s security, it offers scalable, private blockchain transactions while maintaining the speed and cost benefits of Layer 2 solutions.
Anyone can participate as a validator or sequencer by staking AZTEC tokens, earning rewards while helping secure the network. Early participants receive bonuses to encourage decentralization. An AZTEC token auction is scheduled for Dec. 2, opening the door to wider community involvement.
Hitting 500 validators marks a critical mass, ensuring a resilient, decentralized network that can withstand attacks. A larger validator base strengthens security, reduces centralization risks, and lays the foundation for a fully operational Layer 2 on Ethereum.
With the Ignition Chain live, Aztec Network positions privacy-focused, decentralized L2 networks as essential infrastructure, moving from experimental projects to a key pillar of Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem.
