Toronto Site Purchase Paves Way for HIVE Digital’s 7.2 MW Canadian AI Data Center

HIVE Digital Expands Into AI With Acquisition of 7.2 MW Toronto Data Center

HIVE Digital Technologies (HIVE) has announced the purchase of a 7.2-megawatt data center in Toronto, marking a significant step in its expansion into the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure space through its subsidiary, BUZZ HPC.

The facility will become BUZZ HPC’s first Tier 3 data center and is set to undergo upgrades, including the installation of advanced liquid cooling systems. Once fully equipped, the center is expected to accommodate up to 5,000 state-of-the-art GPUs, enabling large-scale AI model training, inference tasks, and enterprise cloud services.

HIVE emphasized that the new data center will serve Canadian businesses and government agencies, aligning with national priorities around digital sovereignty and secure data residency.

“With accelerating demand for high-performance computing and AI infrastructure, this Toronto site gives us the opportunity to establish a sovereign AI data center operated entirely in Canada by a Canadian public company,” said Craig Tavares, President and Chief Operating Officer of BUZZ HPC. “This ensures data security, compliance, and supports Canada’s position as an innovation leader.”

The acquisition comes amid a global race to build domestic AI infrastructure, as nations seek to secure access to computational resources critical for advancing generative AI technologies.

For BUZZ HPC, the Toronto facility marks its first venture into operating its own dedicated site. For HIVE, it underscores a continued shift from its origins in crypto mining to a broader focus on AI and cloud services powered by renewable energy.

Other firms in the bitcoin mining sector, including Core Scientific (CORZ), are also branching into AI and high-performance computing as they diversify revenue streams and adapt to changing market conditions.
