Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings with $126M Purchase, Surpassing El Salvador’s Stash

Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed investment firm, announced on Monday that it has expanded its Bitcoin (BTC) treasury by acquiring an additional 1,241 BTC, valued at approximately 18.4 billion yen ($126 million). This move brings Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings to 6,796 BTC, worth over $706 million at current market prices.

With this latest purchase, Metaplanet has now surpassed El Salvador’s Bitcoin reserves, which stand at 6,174 BTC, as reported by the country’s Bitcoin Office. The acquisition was made at an average price of $102,119 per BTC, marking the firm’s largest purchase since it launched its Bitcoin Treasury Operations in April 2024.

Metaplanet’s performance indicator, BTC Yield, which tracks Bitcoin accumulation per share, stood at 38% for Q2 2025, following exceptional results of 95.6% in Q1 2025 and 309.8% in Q4 2024. The firm’s strategy now aligns closely with Michael Saylor’s renowned Bitcoin accumulation approach, implemented by MicroStrategy (MSTR), which holds over 555,000 BTC globally.

The firm has set its sights on acquiring 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, further cementing its position as one of the largest Bitcoin holders globally. As of Monday, Metaplanet remains the leading publicly traded Bitcoin holder in Asia and ranks 11th globally.
