The aftermath of Binance’s record-breaking $6.3 billion hack has triggered billions of dollars in customer withdrawals, drawing comparisons with the liquidity crisis that brought down FTX in November 2022. However, Binance’s financial position and handling of the incident suggest that the exchange is better equipped to withstand the pressure than FTX was during its final days.
Within the first nine and a half hours of reopening services on November 1, Binance recorded $4.65 billion in customer withdrawals, while deposits totaled $1.01 billion. This left the exchange with net outflows of $3.64 billion. Despite the substantial withdrawals, Binance’s October 28 Proof of Reserves disclosure showed $171 billion in total assets, meaning the outflows represented approximately 2.1% of its reported holdings.
The exchange has also outlined measures to address the financial impact of the exploit. Binance said it had allocated more than $6.34 billion to cover the incident, including $5 billion in the affected tokens. Its partners have additionally frozen approximately $3 billion in funds connected to the attack.
Binance Faces FTX-Level Withdrawal Pressure but Avoids a Similar Liquidity Crisis
The withdrawal figures may resemble the early stages of the FTX collapse, but the underlying financial situations are not the same.
FTX’s downfall exposed a major shortfall in customer funds and questionable financial arrangements involving its affiliated trading firm, Alameda Research. Binance, by comparison, has pledged to absorb the losses resulting from the security breach rather than pass them on to customers.
Bitcoin’s response provides another indication that the current situation differs from November 2022. Following the Binance exploit, BTC briefly approached $76,700 before recovering toward $79,000. The cryptocurrency also maintained its position above the significant $75,000 support level.
The market reaction during the FTX crisis was considerably worse. Bitcoin lost nearly 10% on November 8, 2022, as withdrawal concerns intensified. On November 9, the cryptocurrency suffered another 14.4% decline, ending the session near $15,877 after reaching an intraday low of $15,632.
While Binance’s security breach has triggered heavy withdrawals, market liquidations, and uncertainty, Bitcoin has so far avoided the severe downward spiral witnessed during FTX’s collapse.
Its ability to remain above $75,000 suggests that investors are potentially treating the incident as an isolated exchange security failure rather than evidence of a broader liquidity breakdown across the cryptocurrency market.
Binance’s Previous $4 Billion Settlement Demonstrates Its Ability to Withstand Major Shocks
Binance has already navigated significant financial and regulatory challenges. In November 2023, the exchange agreed to pay more than $4 billion to settle U.S. investigations into anti-money laundering failures and sanctions-related violations.
Founder Changpeng Zhao also pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. He subsequently resigned as CEO and paid an additional $50 million fine.
Despite the substantial settlement and leadership transition, Binance continued operating as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The latest exploit now puts its financial strength, security operations, and ability to retain customer trust under renewed scrutiny.
The consequences have also spread across the broader digital asset market. Bitcoin and Ethereum declined following the breach, spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced significant withdrawals, and leveraged positions faced substantial liquidations. Nevertheless, both leading cryptocurrencies recovered some of their losses after hitting lower price levels.
Can Binance Restore Confidence After Billions in Withdrawals?
The next major development will be whether withdrawal activity gradually declines as Binance provides updated Proof of Reserves information and completes its investigation into the security breach.
The comparison with FTX illustrates the scale of investor anxiety, but it does not necessarily point toward an identical outcome. Binance has continued processing customer withdrawals, resumed its services, committed resources to covering the stolen assets, and maintained operations despite substantial financial pressure.
The latest incident has brought back memories of the 2022 crypto meltdown. However, Binance’s ability to manage the withdrawal surge without an apparent liquidity breakdown could help prevent another exchange failure from escalating into an industry-wide crisis.
