Crypto Week Ahead: Aug. 17-23
The Federal Reserve’s effort to tame inflation without pushing the U.S. economy into recession or sharply increasing unemployment will remain a major market theme this week. Investors will pay close attention to Wednesday’s FOMC minutes for clues about policymakers’ thinking on future interest-rate moves.
Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, estimates only a 25% probability of a September rate hike. He expects the next increase to come in December, while warning that inflation could begin rising again in early 2027.
Geopolitical developments will also be closely watched because shifts in global tensions can quickly affect market volatility and crude oil prices.
Higher interest rates generally pressure cryptocurrencies by reducing demand for riskier assets.
In the crypto sector, EU operators face an Aug. 23 deadline to stop transactions involving 14 designated crypto platforms, making it a key regulatory event for the week.
