Donald Trump’s TRUMP meme coin once climbed to nearly $15 billion in market capitalization before losing momentum as the initial internet frenzy faded. Now, Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP token is preparing to enter the market on September 9, drawing its name from the laptop controversy that became a defining political story before the 2020 presidential election.
The project takes a satirical approach to Trump’s own involvement with meme coins, transforming a politically charged episode involving the Biden family into a cryptocurrency. Its distribution plan also calls for LAPTOP tokens to be airdropped to certain wallets belonging to traders who lost money on TRUMP.
Hunter Biden has promoted the launch through a video montage featuring conservative figures discussing the laptop controversy. The footage includes remarks from Trump that reflect some of the long-running allegations and criticism directed at the Biden family.
The controversy itself forms the foundation of LAPTOP’s branding. However, the token’s planned supply distribution has become a major source of criticism among traders even before the coin begins trading.
LAPTOP’s Token Allocation Draws Scrutiny
The project plans to issue 1 billion LAPTOP tokens on Base. The supply is expected to be divided among founder allocations, airdrops, conditional token burns, charitable donations and expenses connected with the launch.
Hunter Biden and other founders are slated to receive 30% of the total supply. Another 20% is reserved for an airdrop targeting people who lost money on TRUMP, along with other selected recipients.
The proposed airdrop also covers Hunter Biden’s Substack subscribers and individuals included on a mailing list assembled by Andrew Callaghan, host of Channel 5.
Another 30% of the supply is subject to a conditional burn mechanism. According to reporting first published by The Wall Street Journal, those tokens could be destroyed if a Democrat wins the 2028 presidential election or if LAPTOP achieves a higher valuation than TRUMP.
The remaining 20% is designated for charity and costs associated with launching the token.
The project has stated that founder allocations will be restricted through lockups and vesting schedules. It has also described a separate wallet containing tokens linked to predictions involving politics, cryptocurrency and culture, with the outcome of those predictions determining whether the tokens are burned or donated.
Criticism Intensifies Ahead of Launch
LAPTOP has generated a divided response from crypto traders, with critics questioning whether the project could become another celebrity-driven meme coin designed to capitalize on a recognizable name and viral controversy.
Andrew Callaghan distanced himself from the project after his mailing list appeared in the proposed airdrop distribution. He said he and his team were not involved in developing the venture and had only provided the subscriber list to help Hunter Biden expand his reach.
Kraken also removed a promotional post mentioning LAPTOP after receiving criticism from traders.
Base representatives similarly sought to clarify that the network did not participate in designing or promoting the token. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the project had approached his team, but Base decided not to take part in its development or promotion.
The situation underscores the difference between a token being launched on a blockchain and receiving official backing from the network or a crypto company.
It also highlights how promotional activity and distribution arrangements can quickly become contentious when a cryptocurrency is tied to a political personality.
Market Reception Remains Unclear
There is no reliable way to determine LAPTOP’s eventual market value before trading begins. Its association with Hunter Biden, the notoriety of the laptop controversy and the proposed airdrop for some TRUMP holders could attract considerable attention, but sustained demand will ultimately determine how the token performs.
Once trading starts, investors will be able to assess the impact of the project’s key structural features, including the founder allocation, planned airdrop, conditional burn mechanism and funds reserved for charity and launch expenses.
LAPTOP follows the broader trend of politically themed meme coins that derive much of their appeal from famous personalities and highly recognizable narratives.
In this case, the project is attempting to turn one of the Biden family’s most politically controversial episodes into a cryptocurrency. Whether that strategy generates lasting market interest or fuels further criticism of celebrity-backed meme coins remains to be seen.
