Hunter Biden is making the case for his LAPTOP memecoin ahead of its Wednesday launch, portraying the project as an attempt to take back control of a controversy that has defined much of the public discussion around him. He also criticized Donald Trump’s TRUMP token, labeling it a “grift.”
According to Biden, LAPTOP is built around the themes of “resilience, redemption and recovery.” The project plans to distribute tokens to nearly one million wallets that lost money on TRUMP.
In a post on X during the early hours of Wednesday in Asia, Biden acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the project and questioned why a token connected to a subject that had been exploited by others should automatically be dismissed.
Biden cited figures showing that TRUMP has fallen significantly from its 2025 peak, leaving nearly one million wallets with combined losses of about $3.8 billion. LAPTOP will dedicate 20% of its supply to community airdrops, including allocations for wallets that suffered losses while holding TRUMP.
The project has also reserved 30% of its supply for political, crypto and cultural predictions. Tokens associated with predictions that prove correct will be burned, while those linked to predictions that fail will be donated to charitable causes.
Another 30% will go to the founders, including Biden. He said these tokens will be subject to lockup and vesting arrangements.
Biden has also sought to temper expectations among buyers, saying neither he nor others involved in the project should be expected to increase LAPTOP’s value. He framed the token as a vehicle for making a statement rather than simply an asset to own.
The explanation comes after LAPTOP encountered criticism from crypto traders earlier in the week.
Kraken took down a promotional post about the project following trader backlash. Andrew Callaghan, the journalist behind Channel 5, likewise distanced himself from LAPTOP after his audience was included in plans for a token distribution.
Base, the Coinbase-built blockchain where LAPTOP is scheduled to launch, also clarified that it was not a partner of the project. Jesse Pollak, Base’s founder, said the team had been approached but ultimately made a deliberate decision not to participate in designing or promoting the token.
The memecoin draws its identity from the laptop controversy that has surrounded Biden for years. Data reportedly obtained from the device included emails concerning his overseas business activities, along with highly personal photographs, messages and videos involving drug use and his private life. The material became a recurring subject of political attacks and generated thousands of memes across the internet.
LAPTOP now seeks to turn that history into its central narrative, transforming a controversy that was repeatedly used against Biden into the basis for a cryptocurrency project.
