Mirae Asset is preparing to reshape South Korean crypto exchange Korbit into a broader digital investment ecosystem, with its planned transition to the Digital X brand marking the beginning of a larger strategy focused on connecting digital assets, stablecoins, and real-world assets.
The financial group said the exchange’s future will not be limited to competing for cryptocurrency trading volume. Instead, Mirae aims to build an “intelligent investment platform” that combines market information, research, investor education, and digital asset services in one integrated environment.
“We plan to enhance investor education and research capabilities while developing Digital X into an intelligent investment platform where knowledge, data, and deeper investment insights are organically connected,” the company said.
According to Mirae Asset, the “X” in Digital X represents an open future and the possibilities created when different types of value, technology, and financial systems come together.
Mirae Asset Financial Group ranks among Asia’s largest independent financial and asset management firms, with assets under management reportedly reaching around $1 trillion in May.
Mirae’s broader digital asset strategy
The company’s vision goes well beyond a brand update.
Mirae plans to create a unified financial ecosystem that links real-world assets (RWAs), security token offerings (STOs), stablecoins, traditional investments, and cryptocurrencies. The goal is to make Digital X a core digital finance infrastructure platform rather than another exchange focused only on user growth and trading activity.
Korbit currently controls less than 1% of South Korea’s domestic crypto market, trailing major platforms such as Upbit and Bithumb. Despite its smaller position, Mirae Asset said it is not aiming to directly compete with existing exchanges but instead wants to encourage long-term development of the digital asset industry.
The company said it plans to combine Mirae Asset’s global investment expertise with Korbit’s digital asset technology to support sustainable growth of the crypto sector in South Korea and abroad.
The strategy would turn Digital X into a broader investment hub that brings together institutional research, educational resources, investment tools, and digital asset infrastructure.
Mirae also highlighted its commitment to regulatory compliance, stating that the platform will maintain strict anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and fraud prevention procedures. The focus indicates that Digital X is being designed to serve institutional investors as well as everyday crypto users.
Mirae Asset Consulting, a subsidiary of the group, recently increased its ownership stake in Korbit to 97.15% after receiving approval from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.
The company said the acquisition was completed through proper regulatory channels after evaluating business objectives, affiliate responsibilities, and potential opportunities in the digital asset sector.
Mirae Asset confirmed that it does not currently plan to acquire the remaining shares of Korbit. Instead, the firm intends to concentrate on improving Digital X’s competitiveness and expanding its position in the future digital finance landscape.
