One Bitcoin Chart Could Reveal Where BTC Heads Next

Crude oil is approaching a major technical turning point that could affect inflation expectations, interest rates and the outlook for risk assets ranging from Bitcoin to technology stocks. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the leading U.S. oil benchmark, is forming a tightening price pattern that suggests a potentially significant breakout may be approaching.

Market participants are paying close attention because the direction of oil prices could influence investor sentiment and determine how risk-sensitive assets perform over the coming weeks.

The daily WTI chart displays a narrowing structure similar to a funnel lying horizontally. The wide price fluctuations recorded in March and April have gradually diminished, with lower highs and increasingly shallow pullbacks converging around the $102 area.

Technical traders commonly describe this formation as a coil or pennant. As the trading range becomes tighter, price action appears to build pressure before eventually breaking out. Naomi Blohm, senior market advisor at agricultural advisory firm Total Farm Marketing, highlighted the setup on X, noting that such compression can precede a substantial market move.

However, the pattern provides no clear indication of the breakout’s direction. Oil could move sharply higher or fall below its current trading range, creating two potential scenarios for investors.

WTI Breakout Could Send Oil Toward $119 or $93

A bullish breakout would require WTI to move above the pattern’s upper boundary, currently near $105.50. If buyers push prices through that level, the next major resistance area would be the March and April highs between $117 and $119.

A sustained increase in crude prices could complicate the inflation outlook and place additional pressure on financial markets. More expensive energy can raise business and consumer costs, potentially pushing government bond yields higher and encouraging central banks to maintain restrictive interest rates for longer.

These conditions could reduce liquidity and weaken demand for riskier investments, including Bitcoin and technology stocks. Oil has already risen approximately 80% this year, making another substantial rally a potential source of renewed inflation concerns.

Despite often being described as digital gold, Bitcoin has frequently moved in line with equities. CoinDesk’s analysis of TradingView data shows that BTC’s 30-day correlation with the Nasdaq 100 is 0.64, indicating a meaningful relationship between the two markets.

Bitcoin’s relationship with crude oil has shifted since the Iran war began. Its 30-day correlation with oil has moved to minus 0.47, compared with positive 0.18 shortly before the conflict.

This negative correlation suggests that continued strength in oil could coincide with weakness in Bitcoin. If higher energy prices also push bond yields upward and pressure technology shares, cryptocurrency markets could face additional selling pressure.

The opposite scenario would develop if WTI falls below the lower boundary of its narrowing pattern. Traders are monitoring approximately $93 as an important downside level.

A decline toward that price could ease concerns about inflation, reduce pressure on bond yields and improve expectations for monetary policy. Lower energy costs could therefore provide support for equities and cryptocurrencies.

Oil Prices Could Influence Bitcoin’s Next Move

The direction of WTI’s next breakout remains unclear, but the resulting move could help establish the broader market trend in the weeks ahead.

Iran, a major oil exporter that has been at war with the United States since March, is reportedly preparing for the possibility of higher crude prices. Its budget planners are said to be considering an oil price of $130 per barrel for the coming year.

For cryptocurrency investors, the oil market offers an important signal to monitor alongside Bitcoin’s own price action. A breakout toward $117–$119 could intensify inflation concerns and weigh on speculative assets, while a decline toward $93 could ease macroeconomic pressure and support risk appetite.

Until WTI breaks decisively out of its narrowing range, traders will have to account for both possibilities as they assess the outlook for Bitcoin, equities and interest rates.
