Revolut Users Face Crypto and Banking Disruptions Amid Google Cloud Outage

The Revolut outage temporarily affected cryptocurrency access, card transactions and bank transfers following technical problems with Google Cloud’s London infrastructure. The fintech company reassured users that their funds and personal information remained safe. However, the incident raised concerns about the dependence of digital asset services on centralized technology providers.

The disruption started at 06:08 UTC after Google Cloud experienced technical difficulties in its London-based europe-west2 region. Revolut subsequently reported that 27 services were partially unavailable or experiencing issues, including its cryptocurrency offerings. Other financial institutions and public services relying on the same cloud infrastructure were also affected.

Revolut spent the day working to bring its systems back online. By 17:00 UTC, some services had resumed, although Reuters reported that most services listed on the company’s UK status page continued to show problems. Revolut later confirmed that the affected services had been restored.

Google Cloud Outage Raises Concerns Over Cryptocurrency Access

The incident highlighted an important distinction for crypto investors: owning digital assets does not necessarily guarantee uninterrupted access to them.

Revolut users rely on the company’s centralized infrastructure to monitor cryptocurrency balances, review holdings and execute trades. When these systems become unavailable, customers can temporarily lose access to essential account functions, even if their underlying assets remain intact.

Revolut stated that customer funds and personal data were not compromised during the disruption. No verified evidence indicated that the outage caused cryptocurrency theft or missing balances. Instead, the problem involved access to services rather than a confirmed loss of assets.

However, service interruptions can create challenges when cryptocurrency markets experience sharp price movements. Users unable to access their accounts may miss opportunities to buy or sell assets at their intended prices. There has been no independent confirmation that Revolut customers missed specific trades during this incident.

The outage also exposed the shared infrastructure supporting many financial services. Although companies may operate independently, their reliance on the same cloud provider can leave them vulnerable to simultaneous disruptions caused by a single technical failure.

Google Cloud said it was investigating the incident and planned to provide a more detailed explanation following its review.

Centralized Crypto Services Face Infrastructure Risks

The disruption demonstrated that blockchain networks and the applications used to access them are separate components of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. A blockchain can continue operating normally even when a centralized exchange or financial application becomes unavailable. Customers relying on that application may nevertheless be unable to view their holdings, access their accounts or submit trading orders.

Self-custody wallets offer an alternative by allowing users to manage their own private keys rather than depending entirely on a centralized platform. However, this approach also requires users to safeguard their credentials, verify transactions and manage network fees. It does not eliminate every reliance on external infrastructure or technology services.

For Revolut customers, the primary concern was temporary service accessibility rather than a verified loss of cryptocurrency. The company maintained that customer money and data remained secure and subsequently announced that the affected services had been restored.

The incident comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of technology providers that support financial institutions. Reuters reported that UK authorities designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited a critical third-party supplier to the financial sector in July 2026. European Union regulators have also identified major technology companies as important providers whose services underpin financial operations.

As banks, payment providers and cryptocurrency platforms become increasingly reliant on shared cloud infrastructure, technical problems at a single provider can disrupt numerous businesses simultaneously.

Crypto investors can reduce uncertainty during such incidents by monitoring official service announcements, checking account information once systems recover and understanding how their assets are held. An inaccessible balance should not automatically be interpreted as a loss of funds.

The Revolut outage did not provide verified evidence of stolen customer assets or a failure of the underlying blockchain networks. Instead, it highlighted a broader weakness in the digital asset ecosystem: access to cryptocurrency can depend on centralized systems beyond an individual user’s control.
