U.S. Crypto Policy Faces New Uncertainty After White House Adviser Leaves

Patrick Witt, who served as executive director of the White House President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, announced last week that he is leaving the administration to return to the private sector. His departure leaves uncertainty over who will lead the White House’s cryptocurrency policy efforts.

White House crypto leadership remains unclear

The administration currently has no publicly announced successor to Witt, who was President Donald Trump’s latest adviser on digital assets. His exit follows the earlier departures of Harry Jung and Bo Hines, leaving questions about how the White House will maintain its focus on the crypto sector.

Why the departure matters

Despite Washington’s attention shifting toward next month’s midterm elections, federal officials continue to develop regulations and policies affecting digital assets. The White House is also likely to need a point person to coordinate with lawmakers when the new Congress begins work next year.

A White House official told CoinDesk that cryptocurrency and the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act remain priorities for Trump. However, the loss of several key advisers has raised questions about how the administration intends to advance those goals.

The policy agenda for 2027 could prove challenging. The White House may need to pursue crypto-related tax legislation before turning to broader market structure reforms. Its ability to advance these measures could also be affected if Democrats take control of the House of Representatives.

Regulatory work will continue in parallel, with agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency continuing their efforts alongside the Treasury Department.

CoinDesk’s Jesse Hamilton recently examined the apparent vacancy in the administration’s crypto advisory leadership, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the next phase of U.S. digital asset policy.
