OpenAI Eyes $30B Funding Round at Staggering $1.4T Valuation

OpenAI is seeking at least $30 billion in new funding at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg reported, following the postponement of its planned public offering.

The proposed valuation would be calculated before the new capital is added. The funding would give the ChatGPT maker additional financial resources as it prepares for a potential eventual IPO after delaying its 2026 listing plans.

OpenAI last secured major funding in March, raising $122 billion at a valuation of $852 billion, including that investment.

CEO Sam Altman has said OpenAI does not plan to go public this year. He cited increased AI safety concerns and the challenges associated with adapting to increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems.

The company’s financial performance has continued to accelerate despite the delay. OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate topped $40 billion over the summer and has reportedly climbed 70% since July, according to Bloomberg.

OpenAI is also seeking to increase revenue through new products and services. It has rolled out an always-on AI agent called Dots and introduced a subscription plan priced at $500.

The company’s fundraising plans come as rival AI firms also prepare for major capital and market moves. Anthropic is expected to pursue an IPO in November, with its prospectus reportedly outlining $518 billion in planned spending on cloud computing and infrastructure.

Anthropic’s potential listing could value the AI company at more than $2 trillion.
