Metaplanet Dismisses $320M Bitcoin Sale Rumors
Metaplanet has moved to dispel speculation that it was selling Bitcoin after a large transfer from wallets associated with the Tokyo-listed company triggered concerns among investors.
CEO Simon Gerovich said the movement of 5,014 BTC was simply an internal custody transfer and did not represent a sale of the company’s Bitcoin reserves.
“We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours,” Gerovich said, adding that the transaction was part of routine custody operations. He confirmed that no Bitcoin was sold and that Metaplanet continues to hold 43,000 BTC.
Blockchain tracking firms identified the transfer on Wednesday. At prevailing market prices, the 5,014 BTC was worth approximately $320 million, prompting speculation that Metaplanet could be preparing to reduce its holdings.
The incident comes as corporate Bitcoin treasury companies face closer scrutiny from investors. Market participants are increasingly watching whether large corporate holders will sell BTC to secure profits, finance expenses or manage balance-sheet risks.
Strategy has recently sold some of its Bitcoin holdings to help finance dividends on its STRC preferred shares, repurchase STRC and restore its U.S. dollar reserves.
