CSD BR, a Brazilian financial-market infrastructure operator overseeing more than 22 trillion reais in registered assets, has begun mirroring ownership records for selected BTG Pactual investment funds on the public XRP Ledger (XRPL). The initiative creates a near-real-time verification layer for fund records, while CSD BR’s database continues to serve as the official system for registration, custody and settlement.
When investors purchase fund shares, CSD BR updates its ownership records, while the banks servicing those investors maintain separate internal books. Reconciling the two sets of records can take time and add costs, with discrepancies potentially delaying transactions.
The new arrangement allows approved banks and companies to check the XRPL representation against CSD BR’s database at any point. This gives participants another way to identify differences without waiting for a subsequent reconciliation. However, the XRPL record does not replace CSD BR’s official database or the controls surrounding it.
The project is focused largely on streamlining financial-market infrastructure rather than token issuance itself. XRPL’s capabilities for tokenized assets and financial applications support this type of use, although the broader test will be whether the technology can provide dependable verification while fitting into existing fund operations.
How the CSD BR XRPL System Works
Shares already held through CSD BR will be represented by tokens on XRPL using the Multi-Purpose Token standard. The tokens reflect ownership data but do not transfer the underlying assets. CSD BR’s database remains the legal reference for registration, custody and settlement.
Although XRPL is publicly readable, participation in the token system is controlled. Anyone can view token movements and changes, including reversals made by CSD BR, but the depository retains authority over who may own and transfer the tokens. Approved institutions must also comply with identity and anti-money-laundering requirements.
CSD BR can freeze assets or reverse transactions when required by regulators or courts. The resulting structure combines public visibility with permissioned control, rather than creating an unrestricted token that any account can transfer.
This approach differs from private blockchain projects explored by banks and depositories, where access is generally limited to invited participants. CSD BR’s initial implementation also involves live fund records rather than assets created solely for testing. Even so, the project does not establish that it is the first deployment of this model in Brazil or worldwide.
The institutional significance is therefore specific. Authorized participants gain access to a shared record that can be independently read, while the established regulated infrastructure continues to retain legal authority. Wider use of XRPL for financial applications should likewise not be interpreted as proof that XRP itself is required.
CSD BR Expansion Does Not Establish XRP Demand
Founded in 2018, CSD BR is authorized by Brazil’s central bank and securities regulator to operate registration, securities-depository and settlement systems. These regulated functions remain central to the project, along with the identity and anti-money-laundering controls applied to participating institutions.
The announcement does not state that XRP is required to issue, hold, settle or trade the fund tokens. It also does not establish that XRP will be used as liquidity or collateral. Adoption of XRPL alone therefore does not demonstrate direct demand for XRP, and institutional activity involving Ripple should be distinguished from confirmed use of the XRP token.
CSD BR and Ripple plan to evaluate the record-mirroring phase before exploring direct issuance and trading on XRPL. Potential future assets include Brazilian real-estate and agribusiness receivables, although no launch date, transaction volume or asset value has been disclosed.
Direct issuance and trading would represent a broader use of the technology than the current record-mirroring system. Under such a model, assets could potentially be issued and exchanged directly on XRPL rather than simply represented there for verification.
For now, the more than 22 trillion reais figure reflects the scale of assets registered within CSD BR’s infrastructure. It does not mean that 22 trillion reais of assets are currently being tokenized on the XRP Ledger.
